At Takayama’s OPEN FACTORY, visitors can see the process of how Hasami ware is made.
During the factory tour, we introduce each step of ceramic production as you visit the 1st-floor factory, 2nd-floor factory, and kiln factory. You can see the manufacturing site up close — a side of craftsmanship that is not usually open to the public.

❘ Processes You Can See During the Hasami Ware Factory Tour

During the Hasami ware factory tour, you can mainly see the following processes:
Dust removal
Pad printing
Underglaze decoration
Hand painting
Glazing
Glazing robot
Kiln firing
Foot-ring polishing
Inspection
A ceramic piece is not completed through just one process.
Each piece is finished as tableware for everyday use through a series of steps: smoothing the surface of the clay body, adding patterns and character, applying glaze, firing at a high temperature, and finally checking the finished piece.
|Tour Flow

The factory tour begins on the 1st floor with the dust removal process.
You will then move to the 2nd floor, where you can see decoration processes such as pad printing, underglaze decoration, and hand painting, which add patterns and character to the ceramic pieces.
After that, you will return to the 1st floor, where we introduce processes that support the finish and quality of each piece, such as glazing, foot-ring polishing, and inspection.
At the kiln factory, you can also see the firing process, where ceramic pieces are fired at high temperatures
|Role of the 1st-Floor Factory
In the 1st-floor factory, processes such as dust removal, glazing, glazing by robot, foot-ring polishing, and inspection are carried out.
This area brings together important processes: preparing the surface of the clay body, applying glaze, finishing the foot ring after firing, and finally checking the quality.
It is a place that supports the beautiful finish of each piece, as well as the quality that allows it to be used with confidence every day.
|Role of the 2nd-Floor Factory
In the 2nd-floor factory, processes such as pad printing, underglaze decoration, and hand painting are carried out.
This area brings together decoration processes that add patterns and character to the ceramic pieces. Even pieces with the same shape can look very different depending on the patterns and painted designs.
Patterns and logos are printed accurately by pad printing, while the finer details are carefully finished by hand.
|Role of the Kiln Factory
In the kiln factory, the firing process is carried out, where ceramic pieces are fired at high temperatures.
By carefully controlling the temperature and firing time, each piece gains its strength, durability, and unique character.
Firing is an important process that greatly affects the final finish of the ceramic ware.
|Now, let us introduce each process.
