About the Division of Labor System in Hasami Ware >

The craftsmanship of Hasami ware is sustained by a “division of labor system,” where specialists support each stage of production rather than a single kiln completing every process.
This system is one of the defining characteristics of Hasami ware, cultivated over approximately 400 years.

Stable Quality and High Production Capacity Created by Division of Labor

In Hasami ware production, the following processes are mainly divided among specialists.

・Raw materials and clay preparation: a fundamental process that influences the final result and usability
・Forming: specialized techniques such as wheel throwing, molding, and pressure casting to shape the pieces
・Bisque firing: ensuring the strength and stability of the ware
Glazing: an important step that determines color and texture
・Painting and decoration: design expression through hand painting or transfer printing
Final firing: kiln work that determines the final quality

Each process is handled by specialized businesses with experience and technical expertise, enabling both consistent quality and efficient mass production.
This system is the reason why Hasami ware has been widely adopted for both commercial and household tableware.

Flexibility Created by Division of Labor

The division-of-labor system is not merely about efficiency.
Kilns can combine the most suitable processes and artisans according to purpose, quantity, and design, providing the flexibility to meet modern needs such as OEM production, custom orders, large-volume manufacturing, and short lead times.

The Kiln as the “Coordinator”

Kilns in Hasami ware serve as coordinators, connecting each process while managing overall quality, delivery schedules, and design expression.
By leveraging the strengths of the division-of-labor system, they enhance the overall completeness of the final product.

Processes Handled by Takayama, the Kiln >

Within the division-of-labor system of Hasami ware, Takayama, as a kiln, is responsible for the processes from after bisque firing through to the completion of the product.

Main Processes Handled by Takayama

  • HAWAKI(Surface Cleaning)
The bisque-fired pieces are carefully washed to remove surface powder and impurities.
This process greatly influences the final quality of the decoration and glazing.

  • Painting
A crucial process that determines the character of the piece.
By balancing craftsmanship with strict quality standards, we achieve consistent decorative expression.
